Over 70 years…

Wedges, triangular strips and trapezoidal strips

Much lay in ruins after the devastating Second World War, including Neuwied. A 40-year-old man at the time recognized his great opportunity in the years of reconstruction.

Christian Schmidt founded Schmidt & Heck Bauunternehmung, based at Langendorfer Straße 29, back in July 1945. The company focused on the production of building products such as wedges, triangular strips and trapezoidal strips. Just how successful and long-lasting his idea was to be can be seen over 70 years later:

Even today, the manufacture of products from the founding years is still an important pillar of the company.

Railroad sleepers & formwork materials

At the beginning of 1946, the company was renamed Rheinische Bauunion Schmidt & Heck with its headquarters at Langendorfer Straße 55.

In 1950, the production of railroad sleepers and formwork materials for large construction sites began. The company was expanded to include a sawmill. Accordingly, the company was renamed Christian Schmidt Holzgroßhandlung und Sägewerk in 1951.

Sawmill, timber wholesaler & planing mill

The rapid growth of the company made it necessary to move to its current location at Engerser Landstraße 137 in 1958.

A sawmill, a timber wholesaler and a planing mill were built here. From the late 1960s, the range of products was expanded again with the production of high-quality wooden strips for interior fittings and window construction. The company became an important supplier to industry and trade.

Schmidt GmbH today & a look into the future

Since 01.01.2023, the company has been managed by the managing partners Jürgen Schmidt, Eric Schmidt and Christian Schmidt.

In 2022, the start of construction of a new, modern warehouse laid the foundation for a complete conversion of the company premises, including the construction of a new production hall, which will house the entire production of Schmidt GmbH, including all processing steps, within the next 2-3 years.

This means: short distances, low energy consumption, optimum working conditions, faster delivery times, increased efficiency.

This construction phase should be completed by 2025 at the latest and thus accompany Schmidt GmbH into a modern, sustainable future.

We are already working very sustainably today with our own 500 KW PV system; in the final expansion, the planned output will be around 900-1,000 KW.

This will enable the entire company to be self-sufficiently powered by sustainable (solar) energy.

Wood briquettes from our own waste wood

Schmidt GmbH is constantly processing and refining wood in new ways. For example, the production of wood briquettes from the company’s own waste wood has been added to the range: RUF wood briquettes for wood-burning stoves, tiled stoves and wood gasification boilers!

We are already using the sun’s energy today:
The installed capacity is 500 kWp.

On days with optimal conditions, the company’s entire energy requirements are already covered!

We have also converted our internal transportation to 5 electric forklifts:

1 Baumann 5-ton sideloader
1 Baumann 4-ton sideloader
1 Linde 4-way stacker

We are reducing our energy consumption in the long term, using energy sparingly and increasing our energy efficiency in a continuous improvement process.
